Day 6

sunny 28 °C

I am currently sitting in our hotel (the Heritage Station Hotel) soaking my feet in the tub from all the walking we did today. Let me tell you about the hotel first as it is still fresh in my head. We coerced the hotel manager to give us a guided tour of this wondrous heritage site. This once prominent old railway station has a Moorish architectural design. It was designed by A.B. Hubback and officially opened August 1, 1910. It was then used as the Federated Malayan States Railway and originally housed a hostel. He said that the building’s ambiance derives from the Neo-Moorish period, while being heavily influenced by architecture from India, Turkey and Morocco. All the building materials were brought in from England.

Okay so today was full of sightseeing and eating and a fair bit of shopping. We received our Petronas Twin Towers tickets. After a little bit of a wait we got in, rode an elevator to the 41st floor Skybridge and took in the sight of Kuala Lumpur. There are no words to describe the feeling for me other then terrified. Angelina was the brave soul of us two and walked along the window, egging me to come along. Railings or no railing didn’t matter to me; we were 170m above ground. When we finally got down to ground level I metaphorically kissed the ground and let out a long breath.
After about an hour of poking around in town we left for the National Museum, also known as Muzium Negara. We started our self-guided tour in the Merdeka (Independence) Square which is in essence a large field of grass that is surrounded by the National Museum and other various buildings. In the National Museum, there is a majestic entrance and huge murals that depict Malaysian culture and customs. It was about 2RM to get in. There were so many exhibits that I’m having trouble remembering a specific one we saw. The Muzium Negara is connected to the National Planetarium, where we saw the National Monument, the largest free-standing bronze sculpture in the world. It depicts seven men from the Malaysian armed forces holding the national flag.

Our next stop was the Lake Gardens Butterfly and Bird Park. It was so much fun feeding ostriches, and them ignoring the food and going for our clothes. We also went to the Abdul Razak Memorial located near the National Monument. He was the second prime minister of Malaysia. He created the ruling political coalition in Malaysia that is still in existence today.
We were feeling a bit peckish after leaving the Muzium Negara so we decided to try some local food. We had no idea what it was called, but it had curry and it was delicious and tasted much like what he had eaten before.
So that was our day. Full of local sightseeing and getting pecked at by oversized turkeys. Time for bed in our cozy room.
